Myrtle M. ?Mert? Finneman, 85, of Marmarth, ND, passed away Wednesday, August 27, 2003 at the Fallon Medical Complex in Baker. She was born December 29, 1917 at Alpha, ND the daughter of John and Edith (Williamson) Timm. Mert grew up and attended school in Marmarth. During her younger years she participated in the pep squad and also developed a great interest in basketball. Mert married Junior Finneman, they later divorced. To this union were two sons, Gerald and Russell, and a daughter, Sharon. In 1972, she bought Mert?s Caf? where it stands today, and eventually added the dining room. Mert operated her well-known eating spot for thirty years and truly enjoyed being around the people she served. Having the railroad contract, she was open 24 hours a day. Among her many interests were dancing, a fascination with owls, and the color red. Being in the restaurant business, Mert had the opportunity to serve many people and develop many friendships over the years. It was said that she was the type of person that would do anything for anyone in their time of need. Mert used her work to care for many throughout her life. She will be remembered for the caring, generous person she was to her patrons, friends and family. She is preceded in death by two brothers, George & Ray; a sister, Eva Peterson; two grandchildren and a great-grandson. She is survived by two sons: Gerald (Shirley) Finneman of Coarsegold, CA and Russell (Jean) Finneman of Crawford, NE; a daughter, Sharon (Gordon Jr. ) Rustad of Baker; eight grandchildren; twenty great grandchildren; and six great-great grandchildren.
