Visitation for Nick will be from 5:00 p. m. to 8:00 p. m. Friday, February 20 at Stevenson Funeral Home, Baker, with a prayer service taking place at 7:00 p. m. Nick passed away Tuesday, Feb. 17 of brain cancer. After his brain cancer diagnosis in 2011, Nick inspired many with the way he always put his family first while he faced the disease with strength and optimism. Through it all, he kept his sense of humor and brought joy to those around him. But family and friends will remember him for so much more. He was a loving husband who would do anything for his wife, Sara, even if he wasn’t really qualified to do it. He was a devoted father who would brag about his sons’ achievements – big and small – to family, friends, acquaintances and any stranger willing to listen. He loved to dance to the Red Hot Chili Peppers and sing karaoke, had the perfect one-liner for any situation and wasn’t afraid to act ridiculous to get a laugh. Nick was always up for an adventure. He jumped out of an airplane, learned Brazilian jiujitsu in a parking lot from a guitar player and managed to upset his wife – and a pirate – over a parrot during a trip to Las Vegas. He was also smart, kind and generous. He was the kind of husband, father, son, brother and friend everyone wanted to have. Nick was born Jan. 5, 1982, in Sterling, Colo. , to Bill and Phylis Helgoth. He spent his childhood in Fleming, Colo. , where he devoted nearly every free moment playing, discussing or thinking about sports. He could make any activity a competition, and he usually won by proclaiming that his opponents forfeit after they inevitably tired of playing before he did. He graduated from Fleming High School in 2000 and in 2005 graduated from the Ohio Center for Broadcasting in Denver. He moved to Baker, Mont. , in 2005 to work for a radio station. He stayed to be with Sara. When they married May 19, 2007, at the American Lutheran Church, he became a dad to Parker, a role he was ready for since his first date with Sara. He officially adopted Parker in 2008, exactly one week after son Eli was born. A third son, Gavin, was born in 2009. In 2005, Nick started working at Baker Furniture, a job he enjoyed and kept until he was no longer able to work. Nick loved being a dad more than anything. He was never too tired to wake up to soothe a crying baby, never too busy to get on the floor to play and loved coaching his sons in sports. He is survived by his wife, Sara; sons, Parker, Eli and Gavin; parents, Bill and Phylis Helgoth; brother, Jake Helgoth; sister, Ali, her husband, Dominick Ragan and their, daughter Ella; and grandmother, Dorothy West; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. He is also survived by in-laws he loved like the family he was born into, father- and mother-in-law Kelly and Angela Heiser; brother-in-law Michael Heiser and his wife, Kayla, and their children, Xander and Hope; and grandmother-in-law Roxie Brown. He is preceded in death by grandparents Nick and Nina Helgoth and Frank West. In lieu of flowers, an account has been set up at the Bank of Baker for Parker, Eli and Gavin’s education.
