Nick Schmaltz, 85, Dickinson, died Monday, September 1, 2003, at his home after a courageous struggle with failing health. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a. m. , Friday, September 5, 2003, at St. Joseph?s Catholic Church, Dickinson with Fr. Dennis Schafer celebrating. Interment will be in St. Joseph?s Cemetery, Dickinson. Visitation will be Thursday at Price-Murphy Funeral Home from 9 a. m. to 9 p. m. with a rosary and prayer service at 7 p. m. Nick Schmaltz was born March 21, 1918, to Ralph and Veronica (Dukart) Schmaltz in Dickinson. Nick married Adeline Zander on Nov. 12, 1937, at St. Joseph?s Catholic Church, Dickinson. He took over the family farm and has lived there all of his life. He started working for Lehigh Briquetting Plant in 1936. He worked there 20 years and retired in 1969. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, playing cards, and attending auction sales. He was a member of the K of C #1515, and St. Anthony Club. He taught many fishing tricks to his children and grandchildren. Nick is survived by: his wife of 65 years, Adeline, Dickinson; 11 children, LaVerne Kessel, Dayton, Wash. , Donna (Arnie) Betlaf, Dickinson, Bob (Darlene) Schmaltz, Cumberland, Wisc. , Sharon (Bob) Roshau, Dickinson, Linda (Joe) Wanner, Gladstone, Pat (Thurman) Wolf, Dickinson, Bertie (Kurt) Gustafson, Dickinson, Nick, Jr. (Carol) Schmaltz, Dickinson, Bernie (Mike) Wolf, Dickinson, Char (Elldean) Maychrzak, Scranton, Ray Schmaltz, Dickinson; daughter-in-law, Anneliese Schmaltz, Dickinson; 45 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; one great-great granddaughter; four step grandchildren; seven step great-grandchildren; one sister, Minnie Salgado, Seattle, Wash. ; brothers, Stanley, Dickinson and Hank (Joyce) Schmaltz, Portland, Ore. He was preceded in death by: parents; two sons, Ralph, in infancy and Allan Schmaltz; one granddaughter, Renee Schmaltz, and one sister, Rose Whitehead.
