Mass of Christian burial for Nick R. Schafer, 93, of Glen Ullin will be at 10:00 a. m. CST on Thursday, June 18, 2009 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Glen Ullin with Father Joseph Arul officiating. Burial will follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Glen Ullin. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p. m. on Wednesday with a Rosary and Vigil Service beginning at 7 p. m. CST at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Nick passed away peacefully at St. Alexius Hospital in Bismarck on June 15, 2009. Nickolaus Rapheal Schafer was born on the farm in rural Glen Ullin to Peter and Martina (Wilt) Schafer on February 21, 1916. He attended country school and lived on the farm until he married Marianna Veitenheimer at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Glen Ullin on March 4, 1935. To this union 13 children were born. The couple farmed and ranched southwest of Glen Ullin for many years, until the two moved to Glen Ullin in 1985. His hobbies included raising registered Appaloosa horses and Doberman Pinchers. He was a devoted husband and a very loving father and grandfather. He will be especially remembered for his devotion to his family and friends. Nick is survived by his 13 children: Dennis (Dellie) Schafer, Seattle, WA; Wayne (Alvina) Schafer, Mandan, ND; Norman (Helen) Schafer, Bismarck, ND; Sandra (Eugene) Gress, Hazen, ND; Sonja (Charles) Morman, Mandan, ND; Nick (Carole) Schafer, Beulah, ND; Gene (Donna) Schafer, Bismarck, ND; Dean (Sharon) Schafer, Bismarck, ND; Sheila (Duane) Krogstad, Bismarck, ND; triplet daughters: Shelby (Terry) Schantz, Glen Ullin; Sylvia (Eric) Gietzen, Bismarck, ND; Susan (Kelvin) Fitterer, Bismarck, ND and Joel (Debbie) Schafer, Glen Ullin, ND; 36 grandchildren, 50 great grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren and a sister-in-law Monica Erhart. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary, in 1995; his parents: Peter and Martina; two grandsons: Dennis Schafer Jr. and Cory Gietzen; five brothers: Ralph, Mike, Gabe, John and Ray along with three sisters: Rose Gartner, Lena Schantz and Beatrice Gartner.
