Funeral Mass for Nicodemus Kessel 80, of Belfield will be 10 a. m. , Wednesday, September 12, 2007 at St. Bernard?s Catholic Church in Belfield with Father Shannon Lucht celebrating. Burial will be in the St. Bernard?s Cemetery in Belfield. Military rites will be by the William C. Blair Post #144 of Belfield. Visitation will be on Tuesday, September 11, 2007, from 9 a. m. to 4 p. m. at Stevenson Funeral Home in Dickinson continuing at 6:00 p. m. with a Rosary being recited at 7:00 p. m. at St. Bernard?s Catholic Church in Belfield. Visitation will continue on Wednesday one hour prior to service at the church. Nicodemus passed away on Saturday, September 8, 2007 at his home south of Belfield, ND. Nick was born October 17, 1926 the son of Frank J. and Clara (Martin) Kessel in Dickinson, ND. He was raised and educated in Belfield. After graduating from high school Nick attended the Dakota Business College in Fargo. He worked for Amarada Hess and MDU in Glendive and later for Kessel and Kessel Construction. In March of 1945, Nick entered the US Army at Ft. Snelling, MN. He was honorable discharged in December of 1946 after receiving the rank of T-4. Nicodemus was married to Goldie Brodersen on April 19, 1954 at St. Bernard?s Catholic Church in Belfield. After marriage he remained employed with Kessel and Kessel, then Carlson Construction. Nick eventually became self-employed starting the Kessel Tax & Insurance Co. with his wife, Goldie which they operated for many years. Nick enjoyed his children, grandchildren and especially his wife, Goldie. He loved to play cards and teach his children and grandchildren his cards skills. Nick also enjoyed woodworking and carpentry. Nick built several homes, one of which they still live in today. He liked to listen to music especially when his grandchildren made it. Survivors include, his wife, Goldie, Belfield, three sons, Douglas Kessel, Belfield, Bruce Kessel South St. Paul, MN and Sheldon Kessel, St. Paul, MN; four daughters, Nicolette ?Niki? (Ron) Michaels, Plover, WI, Karen (Tim) O?Brien, Belfield, Colleen Lenz, Minneapolis, MN and Connie (Sydney) Forster, Roseville, MN; a brother, Alois (Dorothy) Kessel, Dickinson; four sisters, Angeline (Harry) Romine, Agatha (Floyd) Higgens, Florence Boelow all of Portland, OR and Mary Olinger, Dickinson; 14 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, six brothers, Fred, George, Ignatius, Richard, Leo and Leontious; and a sister, Agnes Halstead. Memorials may be made to the St. Bernard?s Catholic Cemetery Fund.
