Funeral Service for Norbert Underdahl, 92, of Hebron, ND will be 10:00 a.m. CDT Wednesday, May 23, 2012 at St John’s Church, Hebron, with Pastor Gaylund Olson officiating. Military rites will be presented by the Henry Biffert Post # 100 of Hebron. Burial will take place at North Dakota Veterans cemetery, Mandan, ND.
Norbert passed away Friday, May 18, 2012 at Medcenter One Health Center, Bismarck, NDNorbert Martin Underdahl was born on April 20, 1920 at Hebron, Morton county, North Dakota; the second son of Martin and Martha (Petri) Underdahl. Norbert attended Hebron schools where he met his future wife Mildred Mae Schmalenberger. Marriage, however, would wait until after WW 2. Norbert enlisted in the Navy and attended bugler school at San Diego and was quickly shipped out to the South Pacific. He served as bugler and gunners mate from 1942 thru 1945. Upon discharge from the Navy, Norbert married Mildred Schmalenberger on July 8, 1947. The couple began their own milk production business that continued for 64 years through 2011. Norbert was a 4-H leader, baseball pitcher, member of the Hebron City Band, and board member of the Hebron Creamery. As a Lifetime member of the Hebron American Legion, Norb was most proud of constructing and supervising the installation of the memorial crosses placed every Veterans Day. Norbert was a lifetime member of the VFW and the Hebron Lions club. He served as a board member of the North Dakota Dairy Board and the ND State Soil Conservation Board. Norbert’s biggest thrill of horseshoe pitching was being inducted into the National Horseshoe Pitchers Association Hall of Fame. He was also an avid bowler. He was always a quick wit ready with a joke or story to share. “Laughter is always the best medicine.”
Norbert is survived by his wife, Millie Mae; Daughters, Nance (Howard) Bower; Patricia (Jerry) Peterson; Son, John Underdahl; Grandchildren, Terisina (Jerry) Hintz; Noelle (Jason) Craver Dyame (Joanie) Martin; Katie (Randy) Keith; Great Grandchildren, Breece, Coty(Mariah), Josh, Sean Hintz; Grace Bower; Giuseppe Craver; Regan Martin; Oliver Keith; Brother, Alfred (Marjorie) Underdahl; Nephews, Aaron ( Ardis) Underdahl Lynn ( Karen) Underdahl.
He was preceded in death by parents, Martin and Martha and daughter -in-law Kely Underdahl.
