Paul Paulson

A funeral service for Paul E. Paulson, 101, of Dickinson, will be 10:00 a.m., Saturday, April 1, 2017 at St. John Lutheran Church, Dickinson with Pastor Joe Natwick officiating.  Burial will take place in Halliday Cemetery.


Visitation for Paul will from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Friday, March 31, 2016 at Stevenson Funeral Home, Dickinson with a prayer service being held at 6:00 p.m.  Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church.


Long time Dunn County Rancher, Paul E. Paulson passed away March 28, 2017 at St. Luke’s Home in Dickinson where he resided for four years.


Paul Emil Paulson was born October 31, 1915 to Paul and Emma Larson Paulson at Werner, ND.  He was baptized and confirmed at the Ridgeway Lutheran Church near Taylor. He graduated from Taylor High School in 1934 and attended Capital Business College in Bismarck for one term.  Paul spent two summers in Yellowstone National Park, working as a bus boy in a restaurant where he was able to serve President and Mrs. Franklin Roosevelt and shake their hand.  He served in the War Training Service, a branch of the US Air Corps during World War II for one and a half years.  Paul married Ruby Nodland on January 23, 1943 in Glendive, Montana.  They were blessed with five children – Gary, Dennis, Paulette, Sonja and Nikki.  They farmed and ranched south of Halliday until retirement in 1978.  He also worked a short time as a roustabout in the oil field. He continued to live and work on the ranch until 1991 when he and Ruby moved to Dickinson.  Paul was always willing to lend a helping hand to his family, friends, and neighbors. He will be remembered as a great rancher and conservationist, evidenced by the thousands of trees still growing on his ranch.


He was a member of the Marshall Lutheran Church, Marshall ND, and St. John’s Lutheran Church of Dickinson.  At Marshall, he served as Chairman of the Board, Treasurer, Trustee, as well as served on the Big Flat School Board and as a 4H leader.  He was also awarded an Honorary Life Membership to the ND Stockman’s Association, along with being an advisory board member.  He belonged to the Elks, the American Legion, and was a “50 Years In the Saddle” member.  Paulie enjoyed visiting, in good Norwegian tradition, with anyone around a cup of coffee (which he gives credit for a long life).  He was very witty with the one liners and enjoyed writing poetry and stories, watching rodeos and being a Minnesota Twins fan.  Paul discovered the game of golf at the age of 65 and played for many years, outliving all of his partners.


He is survived by his wife, Ruby, of 74 years; one sister, Dorothy (David) Domanski, Canyon Lake, CA; Four children, Gary (Lyla) Paulson, Park River, ND; Dennis (Carolyn) Paulson, Rapid City, SD; Paulette (Paul) Huber, Dickinson, ND; Sonja (Dean) Bergstedt, Washburn, ND;  Eleven grandchildren, Brian, Kristen, and Jon Paulson; Beni, Brady and Sady Paulson; Allison Smits, Jesse, and Josh Huber; Dena Venneman and Ann Schoenberg;  Twelve great-grandchildren, Blake, Paige, Cheyden, Londyn, and Berkley Paulson; Matthew Rohrich; Isaac and Zeke Schoenberg, Ruby and Lena Venneman, Nora and Charlie Huber.


Paul was preceded in death by his daughter, Nikki Paulson; great-granddaughter, Zoey Paulson; his parents, Paul and Emma Paulson; his siblings, Edna Gilbert, Mildred McDonald, Erling Paulson, Clifford Paulson, and Ruth Rimmey.
