Funeral Mass for Peter G. “Pete” Ficek, 88, of Dickinson, ND, formerly of New England, ND, will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, June 1, 2012 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, New England. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s cemetery, New England.
Visitation will take place from 12:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Thursday, May 31, 2012 at Stevenson Funeral Home, Dickinson with a Rosary and Vigil Service taking place at 7:00 p.m.
Pete passed away Monday, May 28, 2012 at St. Benedict’s Health Center, Dickinson.
Peter “Gorgeous” George Ficek was born October 17, 1923 on the family farm north of Dickinson, the son of Joseph and Ann (Binstock) Ficek. He grew up and attended Green River Grade School. After school, Pete served in the CCC. After his service with the CCC, he continued to work on the family farm. By good fortune, Pete injured his knee and was taken to the hospital where he met Mary Hushka. The two were married on October 22, 1947 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Dickinson. The couple spent three years on the family farm. In the fall of 1950, they moved to a farm west of New England. This is where the couple made their home farming & ranching and raised their family. Pete and Mary retired to Dickinson in 2011. Pete loved farming, working with his cattle and woodworking. He lovingly made 12 bird houses; one for each of his children and one for Mary, which each were signed “Poorly Made by Pete”. Pete spent many hours playing cards with his grandkids, telling jokes and performing card tricks. He also enjoyed a cold Oly beer at the end of the day. Pete was a member of the Knights of Columbus and was awarded Family of the Month. He was also a member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church, St. Pius Verein, St. Mary’s School Board and Dickinson Elks Lodge #1137.
Pete is survived by his wife of 64 years, Mary; 11 children, Linda (Ken) Sickler of Aurora, CO, Donna (Lonie) Rohr of Gladstone, ND, Colleen (Mike) Sondeland of Bowman, ND, Dean (Sharon) Ficek of Bismarck, ND, Marlene Simons of Southfield, MI, Rex (Brenda) Ficek of Brainerd, MN, Carla (Gary) Poeckes of Beulah, ND, Nadine (Bryan) Wentz of Dickinson, ND, Joel (Jan) Ficek of Dickinson, ND, Michele (Doug) McHenry of Minot, ND, and Dion (Maripat) Ficek of Dickinson, ND; 23 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Anna; and brothers, Louie, Joe, Frank, Clement, Edward, Ludwig, Steve, Bob, Emil, Blaze, and Andy; and one sister, Anna.
