Funeral Mass for Raymond Schmitt, 96, of Dickinson will be 1:00 p. m. Saturday, April 17, 2010, at St. Patrick?s Catholic Church in Dickinson with Father Todd Kreitinger celebrating. Burial will follow at St. Mary?s Catholic Cemetery in New England, ND. Military honors will be performed by the Dickinson Drill Team. Visitation will be 12:00 p. m. to 9:00 p. m. Friday, April 16, 2010, at Stevenson Funeral Home in Dickinson with a Rosary and Vigil Service held at 7:00 p. m. Raymond passed away Wednesday, April 13, 2010, at St. Luke?s Home in Dickinson. Raymond Schmitt was born December 22, 1913, in Richardton, ND, to Frank and Saraphina (Hoffman) Schmitt. He grew up on the family farm and attended country school. In 1941, Raymond joined the U. S. Army. On May 8, 1943, Raymond married Lily Virginia Morse in Framingham, MA. After the couple married, Raymond returned to the U. S. Army and served as a staff sergeant in the Philippines and later Okinawa, Japan. On December 4, 1945, Raymond was honorably discharged in Ft. Devens, MA. Raymond and Virginia made their home in Massachusetts, where he worked in an asphalt and shingle factory until retirement in 1975. Upon retirement, the couple moved back to New England, ND, where they made their home until Virginia?s passing in 1985. In August of 1988, Raymond married Mary Obritsch at St. Patrick?s Catholic Church in Dickinson and the couple made their home there until Mary passed away in 1996. Raymond continued to make his home in Dickinson until his death. Raymond enjoyed playing cards, dancing, bowling and gardening. Raymond was very proud to have served his country. He was a member of the American Legion, Knights of Columbus Club, Eagles, St. Pius Verein, and St. Anthony Club. He also cooked for the Senior Citizen?s Center while he lived in New England. Raymond is preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Virginia; second wife, Mary; step-son, Frank Simon; brothers, Reynold, Joe, and Cornelius; sisters, Frances Brinster, Barbara Keller, Rose Feist, and Elizabeth Steiner; and one grandson, Edward James. He is survived by his son, Michael (Carmen) Schmitt, Ocala, FL; step-son Mike (Brenda) Obritsch, Rapid City, SD; step-daughters, Carina (Adolph) Ficek, Dickinson, ND, and Diane Eck, Minneapolis, MN; and special nephew, Gordon Schmitt, New England, ND.
