A Funeral Mass for Richard Dick Kessel, 85, of Dickinson, will be 10:00 a.m., Monday, March 20, 2017 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church with Father Keith Streifel celebrating. Burial will take place at a later date in St. Joseph’s Cemetery.
Visitation for Richard will be from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., Sunday, March 19 at Stevenson Funeral Home in Dickinson with a rosary and vigil service being held at 2:00 p.m.
Richard passed away Tuesday, March 14, 2017 at Sheyenne Crossing Care Center, West Fargo, ND.
Richard was born March 18, 1931 in Dickinson, the son of Raphael and Margaret (Klein) Kessel. Growing up he attended school in Dickinson and graduated from Dickinson State College with a teaching degree in 1953. He married Helene (Wax) in 1951 in Dickinson. To this union five children were born; DeAnna, Dean, Deborah and Denise, and baby Joseph.
Richard began teaching in the area and spent the majority of his life refereeing and coaching in Dickinson. Sports was his life passion. Dick was well-known as a Coach, Referee and Umpire. He coached Babe Ruth and women’s softball and went to Nationals with the women’s softball team. He was inducted into the football Hall of Fame for the 1955 football team in the year 2006 and inducted into the Babe Ruth Hall of Fame in 1992. Dick coached and refereed until he was 80 years old.
Dick is survived by his children, DeAnna McMahon (Richard Cartner) of Boise, ID, Deborah (Bryan) Kary of Baker, MT and Denise Kessel of Fargo, ND; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; brother, Robert Kessel and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded by his parents, Raphael and Margaret Kessel; wife, Helene; son, Dean; baby, Joseph; four brothers and five sisters.
