Funeral Services for Dr. Richard ?Dick? Pokorny, 62, of Dickinson will be 10:30 a. m. Wednesday, January 19, 2011, at St. John?s Episcopal Church, Dickinson, with Dr. Bruce L. MacDuffie officiating. Burial will take place at Dickinson Cemetery at a later date. Visitation will be from 12:00 p. m. to 9:00 p. m. Tuesday, January 18, 2011, at Stevenson Funeral Home, Dickinson with a celebration of life service taking place at 7:00 p. m. Visitation will continue on Wednesday from 9:00 a. m. to 10:00 a. m. at St. John?s Episcopal Church. Richard passed away Friday, January 14, 2011, at his home in Dickinson. Dr. Richard ?Dick? Allen Pokorny was born July 26, 1948 to Harold and Edna ?Peg? (Clark) Pokorny in Jamestown, ND. He attended St. John?s Academy and graduated from Jamestown High School in 1966. He attended Valley City State College in Valley City, ND and Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa. He graduated from Palmer in 1972 and opened a clinic in Williston, ND in 1973. In 1981, he moved to Dickinson to practice with is brother, David, in the Pokorny Chiropractic Clinic. He married Constance Scherbenske December 29, 1967, and they had four sons, Charles, Phillip, Thomas and Andrew. They divorced in 1980. He married Fern Docktor June 19, 1982 in Dickinson. Family has always been important to Dick and he spent his life doing whatever he could with and for them. Family gatherings were not the same unless he was there to share a story or tell a joke. His sense of humor was emulated by many. Dick was active in the North Dakota Chiropractic Association as a Northwest Director, Bulletin Publisher and Secretary/Treasurer. The highest honor awarded by the profession, Honorary Lifetime Membership, was given to him in 2006. Because of his love of children, Richard became Pack 26 Cubmaster and Pack Leader. He was also District President for the Boy Scouts of America. He was given the Award of Merit in 1988. He was involved in the Episcopal Church as a lay reader, vestry member, junior and senior wardens, treasurer, and overall ?handyman? in the parish. He was also a delegate to regional and state conventions. Richard understood the importance of giving back to the community so he was active in organizations like Jaycees (Williston) and the Democratic-NPL Party. He was District 37 Chairman. Golf was one of the pleasures of his life. He spent many hours on the golf course at home and wherever he visited. One of his more exciting moments was when he hit his hole in one July of 2003. He is survived by his mother Peg, Fern his wife of 28 years, four sons; Charles (Dione) of Clermont, FL; Phillip of Gilbert, AZ; Thomas (Cristina) and grandson Brayden from Ocoee, FL; and Andrew in Los Angeles, CA; granddaughter Michelle (Garrett) Schilling of Dickinson and two great granddaughters Ember and Emily; brothers David (Dorothy) Pokorny, Bismarck, ND; Michael Pokorny, Grand Junction, CO; sisters Toni Pirkl and Sue (Dan) Coyne, both Jamestown; Jan Tuel, Moorhead, MN; brothers-in-law Robert (Smithe) Docktor, Helena, MT and William (Paulette) Docktor, Missoula, MT; numerous nieces and nephews all over the United States. Richard was preceded in death by his father, grandparents and parents-in-law. Richard requested in lieu of flowers memorials to American Cancer Society, Great West Division 1551 Broadway, Suite 200 Tacoma, WA 98402.
