Dr. Richard Fredrick Schlapman, Minot and formerly of Manning, ND died on Tuesday, April 12, 2005 at his home. Visitation is Sunday from noon until 5:00 p. m. in Thomas Family Funeral, Minot. Funeral services are Monday, April 18, 2005, at 10:00 a. m. at the Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot. Visitation Tuesday from 1:00 p. m. until 2:00 p. m. in Price ?Murphy Funeral Home, Dickinson. Graveside Service Tuesday at 2:00 p. m. in the Dickinson City Cemetery. Richard was born April 18, 1930 to Fred and Lillian (Materna) Schlapman on a farm in Dunn County near Manning, ND. He graduated from Dickinson High School and Dickinson State University with a bachelor?s degree in music. He worked for three years in the Dunn County Auditors Office prior to serving in the U. S. Army from August of 1954 to August of 1956 primarily with the 79th Army Band as a woodwind instrumentalist and received the Good Conduct Medal. Following his Honorable Discharge he taught music at Halliday High School for five years. He received his Master?s Degree from the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, CO and his Doctorate in Business from the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, ND. He had received continuing education at other universities throughout the United States. He taught at Mesa College in Grand Junction CO for two years prior to beginning his career in 1964 as a Professor of Business Administration at Minot State University. In addition he taught numerous terms in the University of North Dakota MBAprogram at Minot Air Force Base. He retired from the Division of Business at Minot State University in May of 1995. He also resided inLas Vegas, NV in the winter months. Richard especially enjoyed music and had a passion for the piano often playing at piano bars in Las Vegas, NV and the Minot area. He still enjoyed gardening and taking care of his yard. He was a financial supporter of the Minnesota Symphony Orchestra, and a member of the Eagles Aerie and the American Legion Post #26 both in Minot. Survivors includes: Niece: Jean (Gust) Velenchenko, Shepherd, MT; nephews; David (Sharon) Gunwall, Moorhead, MN, Wayne (Glenda) Gunwall, Ponca City, OK, Tom (Anita), Jeff (Dana), Rob (Rebecca) and Mickey Gunwall, all of Columbia, SC; fourteen grand-nephews and nieces and numerous great-grand-nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister: Alice Gunwall. Memorials are preferred to the Dr. Richard Schlapman Scholarship Fund at MSU.
