Funeral Mass for Robert H. Messmer, 85, of Dickinson will be held at 10:00 a. m. Saturday, November 13, 2010 at St. Patrick?s Catholic Church, Dickinson. Military Rites will be provided by the Dickinson Honor Guard. Entombment will follow in the Dickinson Mausoleum. Visitation will be from 12:00 p. m. to 9:00 p. m. Friday, November 12, 2010 at Stevenson Funeral Home, Dickinson with a Prayer Service and Rosary at 7:00 p. m. Robert passed away Wednesday, November 10, 2010 at St. Alexius Medical Center in Bismarck. Robert H. Messmer was born January 9, 1925 in Glendive, Montana, the son of Ralph and Elizabeth (Schneider) Messmer. He grew up on the family farm near Lefor. He attended school in Lefor and graduated from Lefor High School in 1945. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army and served for several years before returning to the farm. On November 16, 1948, Robert married Kathryn Scholz at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Lefor. The couple made their home on their farm east of Lefor. On the farm, Robert was proud to raise registered Angus cattle. In 1988, Robert and Kathryn built a home outside of Dickinson and it was here where they made their home for the remainder of his life. Robert enjoyed fishing and hunting, making soup especially borscht, gardening and traveling. He liked to spend time reading and listening to old time music. Robert was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus and American Angus Association. Robert is survived by Kathryn, his wife of nearly 62 years; two sons, James Messmer, Lefor and Robert (Clare) Messmer, Richardton; two daughters, Donnalene (Leon) Spitzer, Fargo and Kathleen (Dean) Pfleger, Bismarck; 2 sisters, Marie Banyai, Missoula, MT and Caroline Lefor, Lefor and seven grandchildren, Mark (Karla Zimmerman) Spitzer, Robert John Messmer, Samantha Messmer, Adam Messmer, Luke Pfleger, Kathryn Pfleger and Jake Pfleger. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, James Messmer.
