Kup passed away on Thursday, September 15, 2011, at Dahl Memorial HealthCare in Ekalaka, MT. Kup was born July 3, 1926 in Beach, North Dakota to Theodore and Agatha Quade and was raised on the family farm just south of Wibaux, Montana. After graduating as Salutatorian of his class from Wibaux County High School in the spring of 1944, Kup joined the United States Navy and was stationed in the South Pacific until the end of World War II. He then attended Rocky Mountain College in Billings, Montana until moving back to Wibaux in 1947 where he married the love of his life, Lona J. Reinecke on November 8, 1947. Upon his return to Wibaux, he went to work at Sawyers Grocery Store and then was employed at the Wibaux Co-op Elevator, Jacks Club and the Rainbow Club before taking a position with The First National Bank and Trust of Wibaux in 1954. In April of 1967 Roland moved his family to Ekalaka where he and Ellis Jones purchased the First National Bank of Ekalaka and the Ekalaka Insurance Agency. They maintained ownership for 42 years until selling the Bank in 2009. Kup was a lifetime advocate for paving Highway 323 of the Canadian Mexican Highway from Ekalaka to Alzada. His goal of riding on pavement from Ekalaka to Alzada at least once in his lifetime was accomplished in the fall of 2010. He was an active member of the Ekalaka Lions Club, St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, Carter County Chamber of Commerce, Montana Bankers Association, and Volunteer Fire Departments in both Wibaux and Ekalaka. He was President of the State Line Babe Ruth League for over 30 years which involved bringing organized baseball to the small communities of eastern Montana. Kup was the ultimate sports fan. He attended thousands of sporting events over his 85 years. At one point he had attended 63 consecutive Boys District Basketball Tournaments and received awards for this accomplishment. One of his biggest joys in life was attending the events of his children and grandchildren, whether it was sports, music, or academics. He was the scorekeeper for basketball games for many years in both Wibaux and Ekalaka and one of his proudest moments was letting the 1980/1981 Carter County High School Boys Basketball team shave off his moustache in the locker room after they won the District Tournament.
