Rose passed away Tuesday, March 26, 2013 at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Health Center in Dickinson.
Rose Zillich was born May 21, 1924 in Gladstone, the daughter of Peter and Mary (Bohn) Zillich. She was raised on a farm south of Gladstone, graduating from Gladstone High School in 1943. Rose then attended Dickinson Teachers College before she began teaching in rural schools in the New England, Gladstone and Lefor areas. In 1942, the family moved to a farm south of Taylor where Rose met Marlin, the neighbor boy to the south. On September 30, 1947, Rose and Marlin were married at Taylor Lutheran Church in Taylor. Marlin, who was always telling jokes and pulling pranks, liked to quip that they got married in September but didn’t get to bed until October. The couple made their home on the Luff farm south of Taylor, where they raised two boys, Ron and Daryl. For 23 years, Marlin and Rose lived on the same farm, in the same house, with Marlin’s father and mother. She worked hard on the farm but always found time to put three meals on the table. She was a great cook and made wonderful pies and donuts. Her sour cream raisin pie was a favorite at many events in the Taylor community. She inherited a love of music from her father but chose not to flaunt her talent of singing and playing the accordion in public. During the 70’s, she worked as a teacher’s aide in Taylor and she served on the election board for many years. Marlin and Rose enjoyed square dancing and spent many evenings promenading around western North Dakota. They traveled some during the winter months, going south to spend time with friends who were snowbirding in Arizona and California; sometimes flying with Leland Brand in his Cessna. After Marlin passed away, Rose moved to Taylor, later moving to Dickinson to St. Luke’s Home in April 2011 and the Country House in December 2011, where she received wonderful care that will always be appreciated by her family. Rose was active in the Taylor Lutheran Church Ladies Auxiliary, VFW Women’s Auxiliary and the Grandvale Homemakers Club.
Rose is survived by her son, Ron (Lucy) Luff of Taylor; three granddaughters, Tanya (Chad) Skager of Taylor, Brenda (Brent) Reems of Bismarck, and Kayla (AJ) Johnson of Froid, MT; seven great-grandchildren, Clayton, Lucas, Megan, Madison, Rilynn, Lilly, and Allyssa; two brothers, Frank Zillich and John (Margie) Zillich of Taylor; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Marlin; one son, Daryl; one sister, Kate Texley; and four brothers, Nick, John, Peter and Anton Zillich; and sister-in-law, Jenny Zillich.
