Shirley Severson

A funeral service for Shirley Severson, 93, of Taylor, will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, February 25, 2017 at Immanuel Church, Taylor with Pastor Earl Peace officiating. Burial will take place in Immanuel Cemetery.


Visitation for Shirley will take place one hour prior to the service at the church.


Shirley passed away Tuesday, February 21, 2017 at Richardton Health Center, Richardton.


Shirley Reetz was born July 8, 1923 to Gustav and Ruby (Groth) Reetz in Hebron, ND. Growing up, she went to grade school at a one room rural school north of Hebron. She graduated from Model High School in Dickinson in 1939. She then went on to receive her bachelor’s degree in education at age 19 from Dickinson Teacher College. After college, she met and married William Severson on December 19, 1943 in Taylor. To this union six children were born; William, Sherman, Ken, Donna, Becky and Carol. Together they raised their children on the family farm north of Taylor. Shirley went back to work for 13 years as a 5th and 6th grade teacher. Shirley was also a member of NDEA, Homemakers, Immanuel Church in Taylor and women’s bible study. She volunteered as a librarian for 13 years at Southwest Indian School in Peoria, AZ. William and Shirley moved to Taylor in 1991. Since May of 2015, she made her home at Richardton Health Center.


Shirley enjoyed traveling, crafts, baking, crossword puzzles and reading. She loved keeping up with all her grandchildren and their many activities.


Shirley is survived by her children, Sherman (Louisa) Severson of Dickinson, Ken (Sandy) Severson of Forest Lake, MN, Donna (Earl) Peace of New Freedom, PA, Becky (Ken) Elkins of Taylor, Carol (Mark) Messer of Richardton; 19 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren and extended family, Mariane (Keith) Elkins and family and Jan Egeland and family.


She is preceded in death by her parents, Gustav and Ruby; husband, William; infant son, William; brothers; Reg, Virgil, Stanley Reetz; grandson, Seth Elkins; and great-grandson, Gabriel Olson; and extended family, David Egeland.


In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to Immanuel Church.
