Susan Ida Fischer was born September 27, 1917, ten miles southwest of Beulah to Christopher and Emila (Redmann) Fischer. At the age of one, she and her twin sister, Louise, were raised northwest of New Salem, known as the Bluegrass area by their maternal grandparents, Pete and Christina Redmann after their parents died from the 1918 Spanish flu epidemic. After grandma Redmann passed away, they lived with their Aunt and Uncle Lydia and Pete Scheck and their cousins Edward, Albert and Delmer Scheck. She attended school and church at St. Markus Congregational Church near her grandparent’s home. Susan was confirmed and received Jesus Christ as her personal savior at the age of 12 at this church. She was a Christian woman all her life. Going to church on Sundays was very important to Susan. Susan was united in marriage to Edward Heinle, son of Jacob and Christina (Sayler) Heinle of Glen Ullin on September 2, 1944 at the Congregational Church in Hebron. They settled on a farm south of Hebron until 1948, when they moved into Hebron. The couple spent part of the winter in Lodi, CA, when Susan’s sister, Louise got married. The couple then returned to Hebron and purchased a farm south of town until the fall of 1952, when they moved back to Hebron after the farm school closed. As her children grew older, Susan began working at the Sweet Shop Cafe’ until about 1980. Her husband, Edward, passed away November 21, 1985. Susan kept herself busy by reading, crocheting, and quilting. She also loved to bake and cook for her family and friends that would visit. Susan entered the Elgin Care Center in the fall of 2007. She was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ, Hebron, where she was an active Guiding Light member for 50 plus years and also sang in the church choir.
She leaves behind her three daughters and one son, Carol (Harold) Gomke of Bismarck, Janice (Kenneth) Wetzel of New Salem, Linda (LeRoy) Preisinger of Minot and Clyde (Gayla) Heinle of Flasher. She also leaves five grandchildren, Laura (Rikki) Lorenz of Bismarck, Stephanie (Mark) Swenson of Bismarck, Stacy (Nicole) Gomke of Plymouth, MN and Cadee and Darbee Heinle of Flasher; five great-grandchildren, William, Samuel and Nathanial Gomke of Plymouth, MN and McKinsey and Maren Swenson of Bismarck; one niece Joan (Norman) Wallace and their son William of Fairfield, CA.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward; her parents, Christopher and Emila Fischer; her twin sister and brother-in-law, Louise and John Dewald and a nephew, Larry Dewald.
