Sylvia “Jean” Carney, 71, passed away August 31, 2019 at Sanford Hospital in Bismarck, ND. In accordance with the family’s wishes, a private memorial service will be held at a later date.


Sylvia was born June 11, 1948 in Dickinson, the daughter to Valentine “Val” and Helen (Fenno) Gieser.  She was the middle sibling of sisters, Annette Fell and Mary Michalaski. Growing up she attended school in Dickinson and graduated from Dickinson State University.  Sylvia eloped with Jack W. Carney on March 26, 1971 and was married in South Dakota.  They resided in West St. Paul, Minnesota prior to moving to Detroit MI, Bolingbrook, IL, and Naperville, IL, prior to returning to Dickinson, ND, where they resided until her death.  Sylvia often traveled to various parts of the US, Europe and the Caribbean representing her husband at various company events.  Sylvia and her husband have one son, Jason W. Carney, daughter-in-law, Amanda (Dukart) and two grandchildren, Katherine (Katie) and Jack (Wayne) who now reside in Shakopee MN.  In March 2019, Sylvia was diagnosed with cancer.  Her cancer was successfully removed. After spending two months in a nursing home with no other health problems, she returned home for four months. She then underwent treatment and surgery for two weeks at CHI and Sanford Bismarck ICU for a bowel obstruction prior to her death.


Sylvia was preceded in death by her parents, Val and Helen Gieser; and her sister, Annette (Fell).


Survivors include her husband Jack of 48 years; sister, Mary Michalaski (Wayne); son, Jason W. (Amanda) Carney; granddaughter, Katherine (Katie), grandson, Jack; and niece, Wendy Simone (Tony).
