Valdene Bowen

A Funeral Service for Valdene C. Bowen, 91, of Phoenix, AZ formerly of Baker, MT will be at 10:30 a. m. Monday, May 19, 2008, in the Chapel of Stevenson Funeral Home in Baker, MT with Rev. Mark D. Arnold officiating. Interment will follow in the family lot in Bonnievale Cemetery at Baker, MT. Valdene passed away on December 2, 2007, at Desert Waters Care Center in Phoenix, AZ. Valdene Christy Bowen was born February 8, 1916, in Shelby County IA, the daughter of Chris and Edna Nelson. Valdene grew up on a farm in Shelby County and graduated from high school in Harlan, IA. On October 3, 1937, Valdene was married to Bryce (Bud) Bowen. They lived in Harlan, IA for several years while Bud managed a grocery store and Valdene was a bookkeeper. In 1948 Bud and Valdene moved to Baker, MT and opened a supermarket, Bud?s Super Valu. They also ran a small ranching operation raising registered Quarter Horses and Black Angus cattle. Valdene was very active in the Baker Community Church, Eastern Star, and her children?s? school activities. After Bud?s death in 1962, Valdene continued operating the Super Valu, putting her three children though college. In 1967, she sold the business, moved to Billings, MT and went to work at the Billings Clinic, until her retirement. She subsequently lived in Salt Lake City, UT before moving to Phoenix, AZ. Valdene is survived by her two sons, Craig (Pam) Bowen and Rick Bowen, a daughter, Rae (Gene) Heaps, two sisters, Dorothy Peterson and Shirley (Shorty) Nelsen, a brother, Chris (Betty) Nelson, five grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren. Valdene is preceded in death by her husband, Bryce, her parents, Chris and Edna, her brother, Oliver and sister, EuniceThe family requests memorial contributions in lieu of flowers.
