Verla Jeanette Madler, 66, passed away Friday evening, January 14, 2011, at the Powder River Manor in Broadus, MT, where she had been a resident since December 2009. Verla was born July 10, 1944, the daughter of William and Matilda (Klos) Fried. She grew up on the family farm south of Baker with her older brother, Roger. While growing up she spent lots of time enjoying activities with her cousins, both the girls and the boys. She attended school in the Baker School System, graduating in 1962. On June 15, 1962, she was united in marriage to Larry Madler in St. Anthony, ID. To this union was born one daughter. The family made their home in the Baker area until 1975. At that time Larry was transferred to Newcastle, WY, for three months and then on to Kermit, TX where they lived until Larry resigned his position in 1977. The family then returned to Montana, where they worked and resided on the Fried family farm. Larry passed away on October 10, 1979. In the spring of 1980, Verla moved to Rapid City, SD, where she lived for close to 15 years before returning once more to her home state of Montana. Upon her return to Montana, Verla purchased a home in Miles City where she resided until shortly before her entrance into Powder River Manor. Being an avid exerciser (even before it was the popular thing to be) the family spent a great deal of time hiking and biking together, both close to home and far away. Verla enjoyed traveling with her small family and covered many miles across the United States seeing all the sights. She and her husband once hiked to the bottom of the Grand Canyon and back up again. Her love of travel continued even after her husband?s death and in 1987 she was privileged to make a trip to Hawaii with her father and two of her aunts and their husbands. Verla had a very close relationship with one of her aunts in particular, Ella (Fried) Hale. She and her family spent many happy days at the Hale home in Mobridge, SD, celebrating various milestones together. Verla is survived by her father, William Fried, who currently resides at Friendship Villa in Miles City; her daughter and son-in-law, Carla and Jerry Brown of Baker; three grandchildren and their families, Larry and Crystal Brown, Lilyan, Zoe, and Lincoln of Salem, OR, Katie and Anthony Hanson and Michael of Baker; and Elizabeth Brown, who is currently attending college in Edmond, OK. She was preceded in death by her brother, Roger; her husband, Larry; and her mother, Matilda.
