A Memorial Service for Vern Bublitz, 93, of Baker, MT, will be held 2:00 p. m. , Friday, May 24, 2013 at American Lutheran Church, Baker, Montana with Pastor Bruce Kolasch officiating. Vern Bublitz passed away April 4, 2013 in Baker, MT. Vern Bublitz was a very independent, strong-willed man and he remained that way until his death. He was the third child of Henry and Linda (Felthusen) Bublitz Sr. He started his life on July 27, 1919 at the family homestead, north of Bowman, ND. Like most farm kids growing up in the Great Depression, the horse and wagon was his transportation to school. Yes, in those days, Vern packed a gun to check his trap-line and to attend rural Mineral Springs School for 12 years. The fall after high school, with a change of clothes tucked under his arm, he hopped on a train for Fargo, ND. Soon after completing college, he landed a banking job in Hettinger, ND. At a country dance, Vern met the love of his life, Merella Egland. Vern and Merella were married on March 28, 1943. They moved to Baker in 1945, where they raised their children, Dwight and Sylvia. Vern was a member of the American Lutheran Church and he was a mason. In his early years, he was an avid hunter. Although Vern was a banker, he couldn’t get the love of the land off his mind. He bought a sheep ranch in Harding County, SD. The ranch, not being as lucrative as banking, was called back to buy into the Baker National Bank. But being a farmer/rancher at heart, he bought a place at Willard, MT. Vern ranched and banked for several years before finally deciding he no longer needed to be a banker and he went to farming and ranching fulltime. Vern brought his son, Dwight into the operation. After retiring from ranching, Vern spent countless hours harassing the locals with his walks through town, enjoying his visits with many, drinking coffee by the potful and playing pinochle with the guys. Vern will be remembered as a man of strong likes and dislikes. Vern is survived by his daughter, Sylvia (Jerry) Landa, of Boyes, MT; four grandchildren, Nicole (Dan) Weiss, Steven Lindstrom, Julie (Rob) Townsend, Daniel (Chandra) Bublitz; five great-grandchildren, Kaylin and Quentin Wheeler, Kyra and Hunter Townsend, and Mavrick Bublitz; and sister, Dorothy Clendenen. He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Merella; son, Dwight; sisters, Margaret and Janet; and brother, Henry.
