Verna was born on October 15, 1918, the daughter of Alexander and Barbara (Grombei) Ruby in Virginia where she spent her childhood.  The family later moved to Pittsburgh, PA.  After high school, Verna traveled to New York where she attended business school and found employment in Bloomingdale’s Department Store in New York City.

Verna married Wilhelm “Bill” Hansen on January 14, 1942 at St. Anselm’s Catholic Church, Bronx, NY. In 1944, the couple moved to Hebron where Bill worked in Frank’s Meat Market. Later, they were involved in several businesses, including the Sweet Shop, later renamed The Brick City Café which was in business for 25 years.  They acquired land in the Hebron area and moved to their farm south of Hebron in 1973.  They enjoyed their passion of antique collecting and refurbishing, thus starting a retirement business, Hansen’s Antiques.  They traveled extensively in pursuit of a truckload of antiques to bring back to life in their hobby shed on the farm.  Bill died on February 3, 1999.  Verna continued to live on the farm until October 2003 when she sold the farmstead and moved into an apartment. In April 2017, she moved to Marian Manor, where she was attended to by a very loving, caring, and compassionate staff, who embraced her like family.

Verna was a devoted member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church, the Christian Mothers and loved to pray the Rosary.  Verna enjoyed cake decorating and not only made many special occasion cakes for families in the surrounding area, but also taught the art of cake decorating.  She loved designing and making quilts, sewing clothes for her daughter, Catherine and her granddaughter, Lauren when they were children.  Verna loved her flower garden and even more, growing vegetables and fruit trees which led to many jars of fresh canned produce for her family and friends to enjoy.

Verna had a love for animals; and loved many dogs she owned and most recently her granddogs, Corky and Mr. Boman who spent hours with Verna both in Hebron and Marian Manor.

Verna is survived by her daughter, Catherine Hansen Dietemann, David Dietemann,  granddaughter, Lauren Dietemann; daughter-in-law, Beth Hansen; grandson, Tony Hansen and wife Sarah; nieces, Donna Ruby,  Katálin Káel of Hungary as well as numerous nieces and nephews in Germany.

She is preceded in death by husband, Bill; son, William A. Hansen on March 19, 2017; parents, Alexander and Barbara Ruby; brothers, Gaisel and Alex; and sister, Joan.
