Verna passed away peacefully Thursday, September 20, 2018.

Verna Dina Maas was born Oct 12, 1924 in a sod house northeast of Krem, ND, the daughter of Edward and Ella (Sailer) Maas. She grew up and attended country school near the family farm.  On November 16, 1924, she was baptized and was later confirmed on July 13, 1938. After completing her education, Verna continued to live at home to help on the farm.  After turning 18, Verna moved to Minneapolis, MN where she worked as the head waitress at Dayton’s Skyroom for 16 years; organizing all the banquets and events for Billy Graham.  It was during her time at Dayton’s that she met her future husband, Emmanuel Hoffer.  The two were later married in Turtle Lake, ND and later moved to Pierre, SD where they welcomed two sons, Emmanuel Edward and Charles Emmanuel, to the family.

In 1967, the family moved with Grandpa and Grandma to the farm near Hazen. After Emmanuel passed away in 1964, Verna and her dad continued to farm. When Charles was old enough to go to school, Verna moved her family to town. While living in Hazen, Verna worked cleaning homes and the Union State Bank. She took great pride in teaching Sunday School for 30 years. In 2015, Verna moved to Glen Ullin where she made Marion Manor her home until her peaceful passing.

Verna enjoyed working outdoors in her vegetable and flower gardens, and would often be found in her kitchen canning and baking for her friends and family. Verna took great pride in being a grandmother and loved spending time with her family.

Verna is survived by her son, Charles Hoffer; daughter-in-law, Pamela Hoffer, grandson, Nicholas Edward Hoffer(Denisse Anaya); granddaughter Jena (Brian) Farid;  great-grandchildren, Mila and Myka Farid; step-grandson, Brian Burks; step-granddaughter, Tanya Kuntz; and step-great-grandson, Charles Burks. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Emmauel; and infant son, Emmanuel Edward.
