On March 3, 1936, Vernon was born to Henry and Esther Glass of Hebron, ND. He attended country school and Hebron High School. He then worked at Kokkler’s Filling Station and at the Hebron Brick Company before volunteering for Army active duty June 12, 1957. He married the love of his life, Gerry Nagel, on October 26, 1957 on the Army Base at Fort Riley, Kansas. While in basic training at Fort Riley, they lived in Junction City, Kansas, until he transferred to Bad Krueznach, Germany.
Vernon was assigned to the Co A 20th Transportation Battalion as a PFC who served as a Motor Vehicle Driver and Mechanics Badge Driver, and Sharpshooter (rifle). He received a Good Conduct Medal and earned awards for safe driving and truck maintenance. He was honorably discharged May 30, 1959.
Upon returning to Hebron, he worked for Harry Rehm Trucking hauling cattle and brick until they moved out to their farm north of Hebron which was named a Centennial Farm (homesteaded by his grandpa Herman Glass) where he raised dairy and beef cattle.
Vernon served as Secretary of the Hebron Creamery Board, President of Farmers Elevator, President of the Senior Citizens Center, was a 4-H member and later leader, member of the Eagles, Jaycees, Hebron Saddle Club and St. John Church (where he served as Deacon for 12 years).
Throughout his life, he enjoyed farming and loved driving his family through National Parks, to garage sales, down the Enchanted Highway and anyplace else we wanted to go. He also enjoyed playing the accordion, fishing, pinochle, rodeos, car races, fairs, watching westerns, puzzles, photography, the Norsk Hostfest, Hazen Jam Sessions, having coffee with friends and family, shooting pool and socializing with everyone.
