Funeral Services for Verona Sletto, 98, of Dickinson are 10 a. m. on Saturday, October 6, 2007, at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Dickinson with the Rev. Steven D. Tangen and Rev. Lisa Lewton, officiating. Interment will be in Dickinson Cemetery, Dickinson. Visitation will be at Stevenson Funeral Home on Friday from 12 noon to 9 p. m. with a prayer service at 7 p. m. Visitation will continue at the church on Saturday one hour prior to the service. Verona passed away on Saturday, September 29, 2007 at the St. Luke?s Home in Dickinson. Verona Strom was born on September 4, 1909, to Peter W. and Mabel (Urevig) Strom. Verona attended country school near Mound, ND and later graduated from Marmarth High School in 1925. She obtained a teaching certificate and taught country school in Bucyrus and Chalky Buttes, ND. On June 27, 1937, she married Kenneth Sletto at Mound, ND. They lived in Rhame and Verona taught school in Rhame and Adelaide, ND. In 1968, the family moved to Dickinson and Verona became the first librarian at the newly constructed high school. She semi retired in 1983, and started work as a literacy advocate which she was the first in Dickinson and North Dakota. Kenneth passsed away on February 28, 1972. Verona?s life was dedicated to teaching but she also enjoyed reading, playing bridge and nature. She was a member of AAUW, St. Joseph?s Hospital Auxiliary, St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church Altar Guild, and past choir director at First Lutheran Church in Rhame. Verona is survived by: one daughter, Linda (Ron) Porten, Lorton, Virginia; three grandchildren, Leah Grossman, Elizabeth Nicholls and Danny Sletto. She was preceded in death by her son, Don Sletto, parents, two brothers, Vincent and Glenn Strom and one sister, Violet Sandgren.
