Veronica passed away Monday, December 25, 2023 at Benedictine Living in Dickinson.
Veronica was born on April 27, 1929 to Frank and Veronica Gotterbarm Martin. She was raised on the Martin family farm two miles east of Gladstone, attending grade school and high school in Gladstone. Following graduation, she attended Dickinson State Teachers College where she earned a teaching certificate. After receiving her certificate, Veronica taught at Shipley School where she stayed with the Ernest Biel family during the school year. During this time she became engaged to Alfred M. Dassinger whom she met in high school. Veronica moved home for a time to help care for her younger siblings after her mother’s death. She and Alfred were married on June 5, 1950. They made their home on the Dassinger farm south of Gladstone where they raised their family of four sons and one daughter.
Veronica was active in St. Thomas parish and KC-ettes of Gladstone. She was instrumental in establishing the soup and strudel supper, and the sausage and farmer hat meals sponsored by the Knights of Columbus. Her favorite place to be was at home on the farm and she probably missed it every day after retiring to Dickinson in 2008.
In 2017, to meet increasing health challenges, Alfred and Veronica moved from their home to Benedict Court, where she lived until her death.
Veronica is survived by her five children: Dale (Pat), Richardton; Audrey Skogen, Hettinger; Bruce, Gladstone; Lyle (Delila), Dickinson; Mark (Janet), Gladstone; 14 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; sister, Elaine Burns of Yakima, WA; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred in 2019; son-in-law, Dale Skogen; her parents; Alfred’s parents, Peter and Mary; 13 siblings; 14 brothers and sisters-in-law; and six nieces and nephews.
