Viola Mae Olson was born September 10, 1921 on the Naard Creek Ranch in Dunn County, North Dakota, the daughter of Cornelius B. and Eva R. (Newcomb) Olson. As a child, she attended rural grade school in the Oakdale area. Viola graduated from Killdeer High School in 1938. She then went to the Bismarck Hospital for three years of nurse’s training, becoming a registered nurse in 1942. In December, Viola was united in marriage to Ira Wing. The first three years of their marriage, Ira and Viola lived on the Wing farm southeast of Hazen, ND. They ranched and farmed west of the Killdeer Mountains until moving into Killdeer in 1959. They owned and managed the Wing Fairway, later renamed Wing’s Super Value Grocery. In 1961, they purchased and lived on a small farmstead southeast of Killdeer, where Ward and Joni Wing now reside. Ira passed away in September of 1969. Viola began her nursing career when she became nurse supervisor at the Beulah Nursing Home at its opening in the early 60’s. About a year later, she began employment at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Dickinson because her daily mileage would be cut in half. She proudly worked as the Nurse Supervisor of the obstetrics unit until her marriage to Dale Bang in 1977. After Viola and Dale’s divorce, Viola moved into Killdeer. She resided at Hawk’s Point in Dickinson from January 2011 until moving to Hill Top Home of Comfort in Killdeer on April 27, 2012. As a child, Viola attended Whetstone Church. She has since been an active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Killdeer where she sang in the church choir for many years and was a member of the Women’s Auxiliary. Viola was also an active member of the Killdeer Mountain Homemakers’ Club.
Viola is survived by her daughter, Claudia (Russell) Ziegler of Mandan; three sons, Wayne (Suzie) Wing and Ward (Joni) Wing of Killdeer, Bernie (Sue) Wing of Arvada, CO; brother, Arthur (Sophie) Olson of Miles City, MT; sister-in-law, Sherrie Olson of Dickinson, 8 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and 5 step-great-grandchildren.
