Violet Jean Meidinger Scammon entered the world on a cold, snowy day in 1929. March 14 of that year saw the type of spring blizzard that can only be found on the high plains. The storm kept the doctor away, so Mom was delivered by her Aunt Rose in the family home outside of Fallon, Montana. She honed her extensive maternal skills by raising her younger brothers while her parents and older brother tended the farm through the Great Depression and World War II. Upon graduation from Terry High School, Vi went to York College in Nebraska and Dickinson State University in North Dakota to obtain her elementary teaching credentials. After completion of her education she returned to Fallon to find a job. She did not want to go to Wibaux, Montana but God had other plans. In 1951, she agreed to teach 2nd grade at Wibaux Elementary School and began attending the Christian Fundamental Church. Vi had not attended the CF church long before she began hearing talk of a handsome sailor who was in Japan serving his country during the Korean War. Before his return, it was suggested to her by the good church people that she might take an interest in this man. Quite possibly, she thought something like "I'll be the judge of that!" Her fortitude was no match for his charm and twinkling blue eyes; they were married on August 29, 1954. Vi taught school and settled into married life until her daughter, Kimberlee, arrived on June 22, 1956. She quit teaching to pursue her calling and the Lord blessed her with two more sons, Kory and Kyle, in 1961 and 1972 respectively. In addition to these three, there are countless others who would gladly call themselves her kids. Faith, family, and community were her loves and forte. Vi was the hostess with the mostest. If you left her table hungry, that was your own fault. It didn't matter the time of day or night you arrived at her door or the number in your party, the questions were always the same: “How was the drive?” and “Are you hungry?” She would only hear your answer to the drive question. In moments her table would be full of food, and the coffee would be brewing. She expended her energy and talents in her church and community as though she had an unlimited supply but couldn't take it with her. She was a Sunday school teacher, youth group leader, choir member, president of the Ladies Aid, and provider of countless casseroles to potlucks. She was a member of the Nursing Home Board, the Garden Club, a 4-H leader, and part of the Homemakers’ Club. She spent numerous hours in the concession stand while her kids were in school, she never missed a game, concert, or play. Vi will be missed by her husband, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and a multitudinous group of extended family and friends that spans the globe. She is survived by her husband, Sam; daughter, Kimberlee (David) Moring of Wibaux, MT; sons, Kory (Lynn) of Wibaux, MT, and Kyle (Beth) of Dickinson, ND; grandchildren, Jesse Scammon and Madaleine Scammon both of Dickinson, ND, Shaun Scammon of Champlin, MN, Karalee (Kevin) Kem of Cedar Rapids, IA, Daniel (Vera) Moring and Allison (Josh) Lewis both of Missoula, MT, Derek (Cassandra) Scammon of Ewa Beach, Hawaii, Holly (Patrick) Beehler of Gladstone, ND, Erika Scammon of Miles City, MT; great-grandchildren, Shayn, Hailee, Brittney, Lexi, Hailey, Emily, Isaac, and Avery; brother, Harvey (Darleen) Meidinger of Glendive, MT; and numerous nieces and nephews. Vi was preceded in death by her parents, Emanuel and Martha Kathryn (Freier) Meidinger; brothers, Arnold and Roger; and infant sister, Evelyn.
