Funeral Mass for Walter Hermes, 88 of Glen Ullin will be at 10:00 a. m. CST on Thursday, January 14, 2010 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Glen Ullin, ND with Father Sebastian Schmidt celebrating. Burial will be this spring at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Glen Ullin. Visitation will be from Wednesday, January 13 from 5:30 p. m. to 8:00 p. m. with a Rosary and Vigil Service at 7:00 p. m. at the Church. Walter passed away on Sunday, January 10, 2010, at his home in Glen Ullin. Walter Hermes was born April 3, 1921 to Math and Anna (Fischer) Hermes on the family farm near Glen Ullin, ND. He grew up on the farm and attended Country School, later graduating from Glen Ullin High School. After graduation Walter moved to Seattle, WA and worked for Boeing Aircraft from 1940-1944. In 1944, Walter enlisted in the United States Army where he served as Staff Sergeant in Hawaii, Philippines, Japan and Korea. Upon being Honorably Discharged in 1946, he earned the Combat Infantry Badge and The Purple Heart. After the service, he moved back to Seattle for a year before returning to Glen Ullin in 1947. On June 14, 1948, Walter married Alice Mosbrucker in Glen Ullin. They farmed southwest of Glen Ullin where they raised their family. Upon retirement, the couple moved into Glen Ullin where they have made their home since. Walter was a 4th Degree Knights of Columbus. He was also a member of the American Legion, Glen Ullin School Board and a 4H Club Leader. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, and especially bowling. Walter was dedicated to God, his Church and his community. His greatest joy was spending time with his children and grandchildren. Walter is survived by his wife, Alice, his children: Diane McKiernan, LaVista, NE, Kirk (Sandy) Giroux, Coram, MT, Duane (Karen) Hermes, Dickinson, ND, Gene (Bev) Hermes, Chaska, MN, Christine Hermes-Parker, Lakeville, MN, Bob (Rosemarie) Kuntz, Bismarck, ND and Douglas (Stefanie) Hermes, Bismarck, ND; 12 grandchildren and a sister, Leona Ulrich, Shelton, WA. Walter is preceded in death by his parents, an infant daughter, Gloria Ann, brothers, Wilbert and Tony Hermes and sisters, Agnes Helfrich and Irene Bullamore. The family prefers memorials to the ND Right to Life or the Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
