Walter Hoff

Walter V. Hoff, 79, Dickinson, died Tuesday, August 2, 2005, at St. Joseph?s Hospital and Health Center, Dickinson. Memorial services are 10 a. m. , Friday, August 5, 2005 at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Dickinson, with Rev. Steve Tangen officiating. Visitation will be 9 a. m. to 9 p. m. , Thursday, August 4, 2005 at Price-Murphy Funeral Home, Dickinson, with a prayer service at 6:30 p. m. Visitation will continue Friday at the church one hour prior to the service. Walter V. Hoff was born September 25, 1925 in Dickinson, ND to Vincent and Marion (Scherger) Hoff. He attended elementary and secondary schools in Dickinson, graduating from Dickinson High School in 1943. He enlisted in the U. S. Army for 2 ? years. He received Bachelor of Science Degrees in English and Social Studies in 1950 from Dickinson State College. He married Dorothy M. Schwartz in Dickinson, ND on June 15, 1953. His first teaching job was at Reeder for the 1950 ? 51 school year. He then took the superintendent?s job at Gardina, ND. He was there one year and moved to Willow City in 1953, where he served as principal and coach. In 1954, he moved to Bucyrus as superintendent and then went to Gladstone in 1955 as the superintendent and coach. They then moved to Echo, OR in 1962 where he served as superintendent of Echo High School. He served there for four years and completed work on his master?s degree in Educational Administration. He received the degree from Eastern Oregon College in 1964. He then became superintendent of Pilot Rock, OR in 1966, a post he held for four years until taking a position as superintendent Belfield in the fall of 1970, a position he held until he retired. Walter and Dorothy then moved to Dickinson. He was a member of the ND High School Activities Association Board, a member of the Dickinson Public Library Board, and Dickinson Elks Lodge #1137. He was inducted into the DSU Athletic Hall of Fame and was also awarded the DSU Alumni Chief Award. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, hunting, reading, playing cards, was an avid sports fan, and enjoyed spending time with his family. He was a coach, mentor, advisor and teacher. He is loved dearly by: his wife, Dorothy, Dickinson, ND; three sons, Dan (Barb) Hoff, Chanhassen, MN, Dave (Michele) Hoff, Bismarck, ND, Doug Hoff, Dickinson, ND; two daughters, Deb Dorval (Scott Weiand), Dickinson, ND, Dina (Scott) Roberts, Dickinson, ND; eight grandchildren, Nick and Alex Hoff, Darik and Dilan Hoff, Tyler Hoff, Danae Dorval, Caden and Devany Roberts; one great-granddaughter, Justice Dolajak and many relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by: his parents; three sisters, Eleanor Burt, Molly Ziker, and Hildegard Rohrman; five brothers, Ralph, Adolph, John, Eddy, and Art; Ryan Lee and grandson Tarin Dorval. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to: the Alzheimer?s Association, 4550 W. 77th St. , Suite 200, Minneapolis, MN 55435.
