Walter passed away on Monday, April 1, 2013 in Fairfield, VT. Walter (Wally) Hovden was born in Killdeer, ND to Edgar and Irma Goth Hovden on August 6, 1944. He attended Killdeer High School, graduating in 1962. He served in the U. S. Army. After basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, he was stationed overseas in Germany where he worked as an airplane mechanic. When discharged, he returned home to ND where he met his wife to be, Sandra (Sandy) Brandvik, at a Grassy Butte dance. They were married December 29th, 1967. The couple moved to Grassy Butte, ND, where they owned and operated Wally’s Bar. Their daughters Sherry and Jan were born during this time. In 1970, they moved to the Ball Ranch located on the Tongue River near Miles City, MT where Wally worked as a cowboy; he recalled his time there fondly. In 1973, he returned to the family ranch west of Killdeer where he joined his father. The ranch was located in the tightknit community of Whetstone where Wally enjoyed close friendships and long work days with his neighbors. In 2005, following Edgar’s death, Wally left the ranch and bought The Triangle Bar in Halliday, ND. After living in Killdeer for a while, Wally and Sandy bought a home in Halliday and joined the community there. Wally was diagnosed with cancer in 2011. He was touched by the support of friends, old and new. In particular, he treasured the Pendleton blanket with which he was honored by his pool team. In September 2012 as his health worsened, he and Sandy moved to Vermont to be closer to their daughters. He was a member of the American Legion, ND Stockman’s Association, and the Dodge Saddle club. He enjoyed good whiskey, a good story, a good card game, and good company.

Walter is preceded in death by his parents Edgar and Irma Goth Hovden.

Walter is survived by his wife Sandra Brandvik Hovden,of Halliday, ND, his daughter Sherry Hovden and her husband Jeffrey Nelson of Fairfield, VT, and his daughter Jan Hovden of Lewiston, ME.
