Wilbert was born on June 13, 1923 on the family farm near Artas, South Dakota, the son of Daniel and Elizabeth (Huber) Schweigert. He grew up in a farm family of 13 siblings. At the age of 13 he moved to Baker where he worked for his brother Jake and Ernest Bechtold. When Wilbert was old enough he enlisted in the US Army and served as an Infantryman in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre in the Philippines. He was awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Service Star during his enlistment. After his discharge in 1946 Wilbert returned to Fallon County where he purchased a farm from his brother, George. Wilbert was married to Anna Mae Gustafson on September 26, 1948 in Baker. Together they farmed and ranched on the Big Hill north of Baker all of his life. In 1957 they built a home in Baker where Wilbert & Anna Mae lived along with ranching and farming. In 1971, their son, Dale joined them in the farming and ranching operation. Wilbert was known by the nickname of ?Whimp? to most of his friends and family. He enjoyed being outdoors with his cattle or his equipment working the land. Whimp loved to fish and enjoyed taking Anna Mae, his grandchildren or his old fishing buddy, Roy. Most Sunday nights were spent sitting at a kitchen table playing a game of pinochle with Russ and Virginia Culver or his nephew Delbert and Alice Kay Schweigert. Whimp and Anna Mae loved to follow their grandchildren in any sport or music event they were in. They also loved to entertain and always opened their home up for all to enjoy. In 2003 he lost the love of his life after 55 years of marriage. He was very proud of his two grandchildren, Jon and Jana as well as a few adopted ones over the years. Whimp, never retired from his life long love of farming and ranching, he just slowed down to a walk for a while. Whimp, was a member of the American Lutheran Church of Baker, Baker School Board, Elevator Board, Conservation District Board and the Hospital Board. He was very proud to have received the Fallon County Outstanding Farmer Award. He is survived by his son Dale (Brenda) Schweigert, Baker, MT; two grandchildren, Jon Schweigert and (special friend, Jessica Black), Casper, WY and Jana Schweigert, Dickinson, ND; Adopted grandchildren, Nic (Terri) Stevenson, Dickinson, ND and 1 Lt. Brandon Stevenson, Kansas and two adopted great-grandchildren, Sadie and Nate Stevenson. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Anna Mae; a daughter, Gail Elizabeth; a granddaughter, Tori Elizabeth and six brothers and seven sisters.
