Funeral Mass for William J. ?Bill? Hankins, 76, of Dickinson will be 10 a. m. , Monday, June 1, 2009 at Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Dickinson, ND with Father Jeff Zwack celebrating. Burial will be in the Dickinson Mausoleum. Visitation will be 12 p. m. to 9 p. m. , Sunday, May 31, 2009 at Stevenson Funeral Home with a prayer service at 4 p. m. Bill passed away May 25, 2009 at his home in Dickinson, NDWilliam J. ?Bill? Hankins was born June 6, 1932 in Glendive, MT, the son of Myron and Etta (Grisdale) Hankins. He attended schools in Mandan, graduating from Mandan High School. Bill attended the Bismarck Junior College and the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks graduating with his teaching certificate. Bill and Alberta Joan Keller were united in marriage on May 16, 1953 in Bismarck, ND. They moved to Dickinson and Bill began his teaching career in Dickinson in 1955. He retired from a lifelong career in teaching in 1997. Bill was a member of the Dickinson Park Board for 18 years, CCD teacher, Volunteered with United Way, Trinity Booster Club and was a member of the Queen of Peace Catholic Church and the choir. He also belonged to the Elk?s Club, the Knights of Columbus and St. Anthony?s Club. In 1949 Bill became a member of the Cords of Harmony Men?s Quartet and they sang at many celebrations, parties and events over the years. Bill also enjoyed hunting with family and friends. Bill is survived by: his daughter; Susan (Doug) Howie, Bismarck, ND; sons; Tom (Kathy) Hankins, Aurora, CO; Bob (Mary) Hankins, Billings, MT and Mark Hankins, Littleton, CO; seven grandchildren; a sister, Betty Tavis, St. Louis, MO; and a sister-in-law, Evelyn Hankins, Casper, WY. He is preceded in death by: his parents; wife, Alberta; brothers, Ed and Joseph Robert Hankins and a sister, Dorothy. Family suggests memorials may be sent to the American Red Cross or Saint Luke?s Nursing Home.
